Parliamentarians have a fundamental legislative, representative, and oversite role in the promotion of equality and non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and advancement of human rights for all citizens in sub-Saharan Africa. Their political leadership role is critical in creating an enabling and conducive environment that allows citizens to thrive and reach their potential.
The first African Parliament Forum on Sexual and Gender Diversity is a network of Parliamentarians from across the continent, with a common vision of promoting inclusion of the rights of LGBTI persons in the region through raising awareness among their constituents, the public and across political party lines; advocate for action on issues of concern and urgency for LGBTI persons, monitor implementation of protective legislations, policies and programmes at all levels of governance.
This platform provides a space for Parliamentarians to connect with each other, engage on key critical issues facing the LGBTI community in the region, share experiences, monitor progress in the implementation of international and regional treaties and strengthen collaboration and partnerships with regional bodies such as SADC and African Union.
This community group is a part of the #WeBelongAfrica Community Hub.
